Background

Towards the end of 2022, as the COVID-19 pandemic moved to a ‘living with COVID-19' phase, it was time for the Vaccine Clinic Finder and the Healthdirect Service Finder to be combined into a single platform—one place for health consumers to search for trusted Australian health services. This project was funded by the Department of Health and Aged Care and delivered by Healthdirect.

The challenge

The ways in which Australians search for health services such as GPs, dentists, physiotherapists or vaccine clinics are distinctly different. We needed to consider search by proximity, availability, accessibility and when to provide guidance to find the right type of service. Our challenge was to design a search experience to cater to these differences whilst keeping the interface simple, easy to use and accessible.

What we did

  • Crafted early concepts to help the team scope the project. 

  • Designed a regular search flow and a guided search flow

  • Led an ‘accessible by design’ approach with our in house accessibility consultant working from beginning to end with product and development teams. 

  • Worked collaboratively with developers, product owners and clinical experts to: define requirements, workshop design challenges and work in sprints. 

  • Concurrently designed the interface for both the website and mobile app experience, and for 16 languages. 

  • Worked with the design system we produce to reuse components wherever possible for development efficiency. 

  • Conducted user testing throughout the project in order to get improvements into the MVP build.

The result

“In FY23, 1.6 million users searched for and booked a GP or COVID vaccine appointment from the same site. Connected with 90 percent of Australian GPs and pharmacies that offer online appointment booking through seven major booking providers, the healthdirect Service Finder has made booking health appointments simple - helping Australians conveniently get the care they need at the right time.” - Healthdirect’s LinkedIn statement
